Athos conduce una tranquilla esistenza con il figlio Raoul. Porthos, appesantito, fa vita godereccia. Aramis ha seguito la sua fede ed è diventato sacerdote. Solo D'Artagnan è ancora al servizio del Re come Capitano dei moschettieri. Siamo nel 1662 e sul trono di Francia siede il crudele e arrogante Luigi XIV, che sta riducendo il Paese alla fame. Intanto, da quasi dieci anni, un misterioso individuo vive segregato nella Bastiglia, col viso coperto da una maschera di ferro. I quattro Moschettieri, decisi a salvare la Nazione, tornano insieme e si propongono di liberare il prigioniero e riportare sul trono una persona degna. Luigi XIV teme il potere dei Gesuiti e ordina ad Aramis di eliminarne il generale, che, in incognito, è Aramis stesso. L'operazione che i Moschettieri vogliono condurre si muove così tra pericoli e rischi, finché il prigioniero, che è il gemello del Re tenuto nascosto, viene liberato e messo sul trono. L'inesperienza però lo tradisce, viene scoperto, torna in carcere, di nuovo i quattro si uniscono per salvarlo e nello scontro decisivo con le guardie del Re, D'Artagnan muore accoltellato da Luigi, che poi era suo figlio avuto segretamente dalla regina madre di cui è sempre stato innamorato. Filippo sale sul trono, e, sulla tomba di D'Artagnan i tre rimasti giurano di nuovo fedeltà .
